Beagles are a notorious breed for being cute, small, and cuddly and, by all stretches of the imagination, stubborn.  My dad thinks they have little dog syndrome and try to act tougher then they really are, but in the end, the result of poor breeding is probably to blame.  However, Beagles are great little dogs; you just need to know that you need to exercise a little more hard work into training them.  Positive only training will not cut it when it comes to training beagles.  They are just too smart and stubborn; plus they are a hunting dog breed and would much rather chase a scent then listen to you unless you have trained them to know that you are the boss…period.  You don’t need to beat your dog but just remember to be firm and loving at the same time.
